If your first language is not English, you must visit the Applied English Center at KU before enrolling for your first semester. You will be asked to take an English competency exam, and may be required to enroll in English language classes in order to reach proficiency. If you have a degree from a college in the U.S., U.K, Australia, New Zealand, or Canada, you will be granted a waiver from examination and English classes.  If you have been awarded a Graduate Teaching Assistantship, you must achieve a score of 50 on the SPEAK test and complete an interview with faculty or staff from KU. The IELTS or the iBT (Internet based TOEFL) test may be substituted for the SPEAK test if you have a score of 27 on the spoken component of the iBT or a score of 8.5 on the IELTS spoken section.
